5 top tips for designing knock-out in-app messaging, from ActionRocket's Head of Design.
In-app messages are a great way to grab consumer’s attention. They can also be used for; onboarding and educating, promoting and upselling, announcements and new features and for feedback and surveys. An in-app message will generally ‘pop up’ when the app is opened, or at a specific trigger point within the app. When it comes to creating and designing an in-app message, here are my top 5 tips…
#1 Design to match the app
Ensure that your in-app message aligns with your app's overall branding. Consistency in colour schemes, fonts, and tone of voice helps reinforce your brand identity. You want the consumer journey to feel as seamless and authentic as possible.
#2 Keep it simple
Keep your messages clear, concise, and easy to understand, with a snappy call to action. Consumers should be able to quickly grasp the purpose of the message without confusion.
#3 Provide an obvious close
A consumer is expecting to jump straight into the app, and will not be expecting to see your message, so respect that. Keep things as brief as possible, and let them close the message down if that’s what they want to do. The last thing you want is to annoy the user!
#4 Use carousels to help break down longer messaging
Whilst keeping a message as simple as possible is still key, this doesn’t mean it can’t be broken out into more bite-sized chunks to help the user digest content. Carousels are a great way to display step-by-step actions or explain features.
#5 Think about timing and context
Delivering messages at the right time and in the appropriate context is key. Avoid interrupting the user experience with irrelevant messages. Instead, send them sparingly and when they're most likely to be helpful or relevant to the user.
