The BBC has many beloved brands, from Radio 4 to iPlayer, each with a strong brand identity. But when each brand also has its own design system, workflows become complicated and the user experience can suffer. That’s why the BBC called on ActionRocket. We streamlined over 10 Email Design Systems into a single, cohesive framework, unifying brand identity and improving workflow efficiency.

In early 2020, the BBC was finalising a bold new rebrand that aimed to unify decades of diverse visual design systems. The BBC’s previous email designs were brand-specific, leading to a fragmented experience and complex workflows. Each core brand had its own Email Design System (EDS) with unique modules, causing inefficiencies and increased costs due to the need to recreate modules for each brand.
The BBC approached us to transform their EDS for the Netherlands, making it user-friendly, fit-for-purpose and aligned with the rebrand. We developed a single, unified EDS that harmonised the visual identity across TV, Radio, Sport, Education, Weather and other BBC brands. This new system allowed for seamless integration of modules, reducing duplication of effort and simplifying workflows.

Working with Action Rocket on our redesigned e-newsletter template has been a brilliant experience. The new design is slick, clear, and truly embodies the essence of our refreshed channel brand: BBC NL.
“The results have been remarkable”, the client told us, with key engagement metrics far exceeding the usual benchmarks. This initiative brought visual cohesion to the BBC’s diverse offerings and demonstrated how branding elements can be effectively tied together to create a unified and engaging user experience. What’s more, it streamlined the BBC’s internal process into an efficient workflow while maintaining a strong brand identity across all channels.
